I understand, that it can be scary. What I would suggest to do - seriousely think about your appearance - get a good hairdresser, buy some sexy clothes, ask other people advise if you don't know how. This is the first step, but an important one. You need to be noticible - right? Second - join some single club or just an interest club, where people meet casually to do some activities, like sports, book clubs, dancing. This is not scary. You just coming there to do what you like and there are some other people there too. And if you look at your best and you are friendly ans smiling, men would notice you.
If you forgot how to date and would like to learn about modern "rules", go to video store, rent the whole 3 seasons of "Sex and the city" and watch the whole thing. Of course, these woman are 35 and they are in New York and a lot of situatons are showed too "extreme", but there are a lot of true stories in this movie.
Also get a few good modern books about dating. Amazon.com is a good place to get them, because you can read people reviews to understand if this book would be good for you or not.
Ask friends to introduce you to somebody single of your age. This is not a bad idea, because this way you would know a lot about the person in advance. Good Luck!
